Windows 10: End of Life

Windows 10 End of Life is coming: are you prepared?

On 14 October 2025, it’s happening: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10. This means no more security updates, no more bug fixes, and no technical assistance either. You can still use your computer, but from that moment on, you’ll be at risk.

What does this mean for you? Should you switch to Windows 11? And what if your PC isn’t compatible? In this blog, you’ll read about your options and how to prepare properly.

What does the end of Windows 10 support mean?

From 14 October 2025, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive updates. This has several important consequences:

  • No more security updates, your PC will become more vulnerable
  • No assistance from Microsoft or manufacturers
  • No new features or improvements
  • Increased risk of viruses, malware and system issues

You can continue to use Windows 10 after this date, but entirely at your own risk. Especially if you store personal or business data on your PC, switching to a supported system is strongly recommended.

Why switch to Windows 11?

Windows 11 is the logical successor to Windows 10. It’s not only much more modern, but also significantly more secure. And that’s exactly what matters in 2025: safety and reliability.

The main advantages of Windows 11:
  • Continuous security updates
  • Improved performance and stability
  • New features such as Widgets, multiple desktops and Android apps
  • Sleeker, more user-friendly interface
  • Better management of privacy and system resources

Is your PC compatible with the new Windows?

Not every PC running Windows 10 can simply switch over. Microsoft has set stricter hardware requirements for devices using Windows 11.

  • Minimum requirements include:
  • 64-bit processor with 1 GHz (dual-core)
  • 4 GB RAM 64 GB storage
  • TPM 2.0 chip for better security
  • Support for Secure Boot and DirectX 12

You can easily check if your device meets these requirements via Microsoft’s official guide: Check if your PC is compatible with Windows 11

What if your PC isn't compatible?

If it turns out your current device isn’t suitable for Windows 11, you have a few options:

  • Continue at your own risk (not recommended)
  • Invest in a new (refurbished) device with Windows 11
  • Switch to alternative systems (e.g. Linux, Chromebook – often less suitable for business use)

Refurbished laptops or desktops are a smart choice if you want to upgrade without paying a premium. These devices are fully checked, supplied with Windows 11, and often very competitively priced.

Be on time and protect your files

October 2025 may still seem far away, but time flies. Many users will only make the switch at the last moment, which could lead to busy technical support lines and limited availability of suitable devices. By switching to Windows 11 now, you can avoid last-minute stress, waiting times or a limited selection.

Whether you upgrade or purchase a new device, make sure your files are safe. Back up your data in time and consider a cloud solution such as OneDrive. That way, you can be sure your important documents remain safe and accessible, even after the switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free?

Yes, the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is free of charge. However, your device must meet certain system requirements, such as a supported processor, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. You can easily check whether your PC is eligible for the upgrade via Windows Update.

Will my files be deleted when upgrading from Windows 10 to 11?

No, during a standard upgrade to Windows 11 your personal files, programmes and settings will remain intact. Nevertheless, it’s recommended to make a backup beforehand, just to be safe. This helps you avoid losing any data if there are installation issues.

Do I need to remove Windows 10 after installing Windows 11?

No, you don’t need to do this yourself. Ten days after the upgrade, Windows automatically removes the old Windows 10 installation from your PC. If you want to free up disk space sooner and are sure everything works properly in Windows 11, you can also delete these files manually.
